What's going on?

People are clearly not losing interest in encryption. There are probably around 10 million users of identity-based encryption today, for example, which is 10 million more than there were just a few years ago. Voltage is doing fairly well. I suspect that other encryption vendors are also.

On the other hand, if you look at the number of Google searches for "encryption," you'll find that the number of searches has been gradually dropping for the past few years. There are now fewer than half as many of these searches than there were in 2004. What's going on? Are people finding information about encryption in some other way? Are more searches being done by other search engines? Or is there some other reason?

I'd guess people learn more about it in general, so they have less need to google it, or, more likely, they go straight to wikipedia these days.
